Case Study for Family Martial Arts Liverpool

Electric Far Infrared Heating

Sports Hall Heating

Date: March 2019

Customer Brief

Following the success of our previous Electric Far Infra-red heating installation at Family Martial Arts (Aintree), OKEL were approached by our customer to deliver a similar heating solution for another studio located in South Liverpool.

The martial studio was situated within a large open plan warehouse facility and unlike the Aintree studio at the time of contacting OKEL South Liverpool had no existing form of heat. Members and their families were often commenting on the cold temperatures inside the building, particularly for those spectating rather than taking part in the physical activities.

The total unit size was approximately 40m² with a maximum ceiling height of 9m however due to the physical activities that took place within the martial arts studio it was only the spectators viewing area that was to be heated.

OKEL Solution

Taking into consideration all of the findings from OKEL’s site survey and success of the electric far infra-red heating project at our client’s other studio in Warrington, OKEL proposed installing a similar design that would consist of OKEL’s high efficiency far infra-red heater bars (2.4 kw capacity per heater) which were to be suspended above the spectators viewing area and positioned for maximum heat benefit.

Electric far infra-red was chosen as it’s an ideal solution for spot heating areas and the benefits of the heat are felt almost immediately therefore removing lengthy periods of time waiting for an area to reach its required temperature.

Sports Hall Heating Installation and Hand Over

Prior to the installation OKEL’s assigned NICEIC electrical approved engineers completed a pre installation site visit of the premises. The site visit included an inspection of the existing electrical supply to ensure there was enough capacity to accommodate the proposed far infrared heating solution and planning of the heaters positioning to deliver the most even spread of heat whilst considering the layout of the area below.

As there was no suitable supporting structure already in situ that would assist with the suspension of the heaters, OKEL’s installation team produced a well thought out design which introduced Unistrut to design a bespoke ceiling mounted support structure above the spectators viewing area.

Prior to the installation detailed risk assessments and method statements were forwarded to our client capturing all aspects of the installation; including working at height safety requirements necessary for the suspension of the far infrared heaters.

Upon completion of the project OKEL’s lead engineer provided a project handover to ensure our client was confident on the capabilities of the new heating system and was able to maximise the efficiencies by effective use of the intelligent thermostatic controls. To complete our client’s project electronic copies of NICEIC electrical commissioning certification were forwarded to the client to retain on file.
